What is Lissencephaly?
Lissencephaly, which literally means smooth brain, is a rare brain formation disorder caused by defective neuronal migration during the 12th to 24th weeks of gestation resulting in a lack of development of brain folds (gyri) and grooves (sulci). It is a form of cephalic disorder. Terms such as 'agyria' (no gyri) or 'pachygyria' (broad gyri) are used to describe the appearance of the surface of the brain. Children with lissencephaly generally have significant developmental delays, but these vary greatly from child to child depending on the degree of brain malformation and seizure control. Life expectancy can be shortened, generally due to respiratory problems.
Day Care Centre
Our new vision?
We have just launched the concept of our Day Care. We are currently busy with all the paper work
The Day Care Centre initiative started with people who followed Anushca's journey very closely. Mommies of children who have a Neurological Syndrome to find the right day care. We have found in research that there is only 6 children in the whole of South Africa who have Lissencephaly.
We also found that there are children who have Microcephaly (The disorder may stem from a wide variety of conditions that cause abnormal growth of the brain, or from syndromes associated with chromosomal abnormalities). For this reason we have decided to start a Centre for children with Neurological Syndromes.
In this Day care we will have Sister, which is a professional trained ICU Sister with her medical team who will look with good care after the children.
The centre will cater for the following:
- Occupational Therapy
- Masaring Therapy
- Water Therapy
Please follow our Facebook page for more info. We will keep you posted on all our development.
